The collegian, who sustained deep cuts on the wrists, is stable. The accused, Bachu Ali, has been arrested and booked for attempt to murder.
Ali accosted the girl near Mithibai College around 8.30am when she left her house in Nehru Nagar.
An employee of Mithibai College who witnessed the incident told TOI: "The man, who was already at the spot, spoke briefly to the girl and suddenly attacked her."
The petrified girl's screams caught the attention of the people who were around on the street. They chased Ali and handed him over to a police patrol team. The knife used by Ali has been recovered by the police.
The girl was taken to Cooper Hospital at Juhu, and later shifted to Sion hospital. "It's a case of a one-sided affair," said a police officer.
Ali, said the police, had proposed to the girl several times but she has turned down his proposals. An officer from Juhu police station said that he had approached again on Saturday night but she ignored him.
Ali, who has two assault cases against him, had been externed from Juhu in 2011.
Deputy commissioner of police Vinayak Deshmukh said that the girl is in a state of shock. "We will record her statement once she comes around," said Deshmukh.
