MUMBAI: The plan for a coastal road will soon get the green signal from the ministry of environment and forests (MoEF), Union minister Prakash Javadekar said here on Sunday.

Javadekar said, "We had taken a positive stand in terms of the coastal road. The Maharashtra government is sending us proposals with the changes that have been discussed. Officials from the Centre and state are in constant touch and a solution will be worked out soon. I am very confident that Mumbai will get its coastal road." The 36km coastal road between Cuffe Parade and Dahisar will include roads on reclaimed land (about 10km) and two 3.5km tunnels under the sea.

He said permission for projects across all states, which have been stalled due to environmental clearance, will be worked out soon. "We will work out a way so that all projects which are important for the country's development can be carried out without causing any harm to nature and the environment," said Javadekar.

The minister also said work on the proposed Shivaji memorial in the Arabian Sea, off Marine Drive, will take off soon. "The chief minister (Devendra Fadnavis) had made it clear that the bhumi pujan be held only after the work is allotted so that there is no further delay. Once that is done, the work can begin," he said.

Javadekar also said that he was confident that the amended Land Acquisition Bill will be passed by the Rajya Sabha this week. "The amended bill has taken suggestions from various parties. The bill, with nine changes, is in the best interest of farmers and we hope that everyone will understand that and extend support so that the bill can be passed in the Rajya Sabha," he said.

He added that the Coal Mines (Special Provisions) Bill and the Mines and Minerals Bill, which are with select committees, will also get the Houses' consent this week. "We have proved that the coal and mineral auction is the best way. The method ensures total transparency, leaving no scope for corruption," said Javadekar.
