MUMBAI: Sixty illegal rooms constructed on mangrove land in Penkarpada of Mira Road and sold to buyers for a few lakhs were demolished by the state revenue department.
While police cases have been filed against the purchasers of the rooms for destroying mangroves, no action has been taken against state and civic officials for allowing the settlement with electricity and water supply, to come up.
The state revenue department along with the Mira Bhayander Municipal Corporation (MBMC) razed down the pucca structures near the crematorium at Penkarpada near the Dahisar octroi naka on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad national highway.
Occupants of the rooms showed purchase agreement copies of the plots. The structure had sprung up on the state government land covered with mangroves early last year. Both the state and the municipality had turned a blind eye as water pipelines, electricity and street lights were given to the settlement named Bhavani Nagar. A number of rooms were in the names of families and relatives of corporators of the MBMC.
In August last year, the municipality filed cases against 49 room owners with the Kashimira police station for destroying mangroves. The construction of rooms continued after the police complaint. Occupants said that they had purchased each room for Rs 6 lakh. Occupants complained that they were not given notices before the demolition was carried out. They were not allowed to remove their belongings when the demolition squad arrived.
A number of illegal rooms for residential purpose are being constructed by destroying mangroves along the Mumbai-Ahmedabad national highway at Mira Road, Bhayander and Vasai-Virar.
