Activists see red over ?green plan? of MMRDA at Metro site

MUMBAI: The MMRDA had planned to plant saplings at the Metro shed site in Aarey Colony to improve its image. But the "PR move" has bombed.

Activists found that the new saplings having already dried up. "While approximately 20 saplings were planted, several more had been brought and kept at the nursery set up by the MMRDA. But due to the officials' casual approach the saplings have dried up," said Stalin Dayanand, project director of the NGO Vanashakti. "Even if work on the proposed Metro-III shed may have stopped at the site, they should have taken care to see to it that the trees are nurtured well. This is always been happening in cases of transplantation or compensatory plantation of trees for any project," said activist Anand Pendharkar from NGO Sprouts.

Environmentalist Rishi Agarwal, a member of the 'Save Aarey Movement' termed this compensatory plantation as a complete "green wash" and a "potential disaster waiting to happen". The MMRDA had tabled a proposal tabled before the BMC to transplant 2044 trees and chop down 254. The agency sought to compensate the loss of foliage by planting new saplings.

Another campaigner Manish Sethi said the track record of the authorities had not been good. "This clearly proves our point. The area chosen by the authorities was a low-lying area and therefore it was expected to get waterlogged during the monsoon. However, in this case much before the monsoons the lack off nurturing has lead to the saplings drying up. The authorities who shifted their machinery and moved out after the chief minister formed a committee recently to look into Metro-III project, forgot about the saplings."

MMRDA officials could not be reached for comment.
