Rly’s Nirbhaya squad set to get more personnel

MUMBAI: In a boost for women's security on the railways, the GRP's Nirbhaya squad, which has been nabbing pickpockets and snatchers inside ladies coaches, is set to get 10 more personnel. The all-female squad operates in disguise and has an impressive performance record to boast of; its personnel solved 56 offences and apprehended 30 offenders last year.

The Nirbhaya squad was launched on the Central Railway in the beginning of last year and 15 personnel were shortlisted on the basis of their agility and investigative skills. In September 2014, the squad was extended to the Western Railway and 15 more personnel were added. "We are soon augmenting its strength from 30 to 40," GRP commissioner Ravinder Singal told TOI.

Squad members say they have come across offenders belonging to decent backgrounds. "There was a bank employee who worked in south Mumbai but committed crimes in ladies compartments of locals after work. We had also nabbed a female security guard on one occasion. Offenders come up with newer modus operandi to avoid getting caught," said constable Vidya Deshmukh of the squad. She recounted a case where an accused had tucked away stolen ornaments into a secret compartment sewn into her bag. "Throwing away stolen ornaments, when intercepted, in a bid to assert their innocence is common practice. We have dealt with cases where offenders injure themselves and claim the cops did it. On one occasion, an accused stripped and started roaming on the tracks, claiming to have lost her mental balance. It can get tricky to handle such situations," said constable Jyotsna Dalvi of the squad.

The highest number of offences solved by the squad last year were in Thane (14 cases) and Dadar (12 cases) regions on CR. "Commuters show no interest in filing a formal complaint once they get their stolen valuables back. But it is necessary for us to report the accused to the nearest GRP outpost. Convincing commuters to lodge an FIR often takes up a lot of our time," says a constable. From being repeatedly asked to prove their identity and getting no assistance from witnesses in the ladies coach, to getting bitten by an accused, the squad has braved it all. "The squad is briefed every day as to how they can get better at their work. We also update them on amendments in law," said inspector S Bokil, who heads Nirbhaya.
