MUMBAI: The ministry of human resources and development, in a directive issued on February 13, has asked schools to dedicate time in the daily time-table to allow enough time for schoolchildren and teachers to wash hands with soap. The guidelines were issued with regards to food safety and hygiene for all schools covered under the mid-day meal scheme. It further states that washing hands with soap before and after eating food should be promoted, supervised and monitored vigorously. It goes on to give details of how empty plastic bottles can be filled with diluted liquid soap for usage and other provisions that school should make to facilitate hand-washing.

However, most other guidelines, enlisted for the cooking area and kitchens, are not applicable to schools in Mumbai as they are supplied meals by agencies and not cooked in schools. But rules on hygiene of handlers, and the ones who serve food will be applicable.
