MUMBAI: Long labelled one of the largest slums in Asia, the industrious township of Dharavi is keen to redeem its reputation with an art festival this weekend. The three-week 'Alley Galli Biennale' is a project dedicated to urban health.

The Dharavi Biennale organised by the NGO Sneha begins February 15 and ends March 7. Events are spread across three venues in the locality, the Colour Box centre and Swami Vivekananda Society at 90 Feet Road and Jeevan Hall near Mahim railway crossing.

Artists, local residents and health workers will use recycled material to prepare artworks. They will display handpainted portraits of doctors working in Dharavi apart from multimedia projects, live performances, screenings and installations. The themes range from the Nirbhaya gang rape to child welfare, gender violence, depression, STD and occupational hazards.

Prof David Osrin and Nayreen Daruwalla are associate art directors for the festival. One of the organisers Prakash Padikkal said, ""We have been preparing for the last two years with about 400 residents. It has been an adventure, collaborating with artists and artisans, working from our Centre Colour Box and sourcing materials from recycling units.""
