A master, a protégé and a Dane star to jazz up Sunday

The last time a lifetime achievement awardee sang at Bandra's Mehboob Studios, book lovers' jaws dropped. Reclusive writer Rohinton Mistry had launched into a cowboy song in December here, finally exposing his gifted voice. Today, only two months later, history will repeat itself in a way, as blues legend Buddy Guy, who recently won the lifetime achievement award at the Grammys, prepares to grace the same stage to inspire a similar effect on blues lovers. Guy, a 78-year-old human bridge between blues and rock and roll, will regale audiences with his trademark West Side version of the soulful genre at the Mahindra Blues Festival this evening.

Here, the cheerful bluesman, who famously fashioned a guitar out of wood and hairpins at age seven, will perform along with his 15-year-old protege Quinn Sullivan whose parents gifted him a guitar when he was three. The evening will begin with a performance by the faculty and the students of True School of Music. Danish singer Thorbjorn Risager will make his debut in Mumbai when he performs with his seven-piece band The Black Tornado, one of Denmark's hottest exports.

While meeting journalists in a five-star hotel in Bandra earlier this week, these household names from the blues world spoke about their early beginnings, the sway of the music in their lives as well as the role of destiny in their careers. It was in fact a chance meeting with his hero Guy in Massachusetts that had led to Sullivan becoming Guy's protege. Since then, the 15-year-old prodigy has gone on to tour the world not only with Guy but also with other greats such as Eric Clapton and Jimmie Vaughan. Today, he is even known as the cure for the 'Bieber fever'. At the fest today, Sullivan will play songs from his two albums and a few covers that he loves to perform live.

Unlike this teen protege who has had a fairly early start, 38-year-old Danish singer Risager's foray into the American genre was long-drawn. Risager first studied to be a teacher before formally studying music at the Rhythmic Conservatory in Copenhagen. It was only after a neighbour introduced him to the blues that his lifelong affair with the genre began. But his music remains genre-defying, and he melds his raunchy voice with the big grooves of his seven-piece band, The Black Tornado, which he started in 2003. Today, his band will perform songs from their latest album, 'Too many roads'. "We want to make the audience dance," said Risager.

The close of the festival promises a powerhouse jamming session. Here, these artistes will be joined by the three musicians who performed last night including the funky left-handed Texan guitarist Doyle Bramhall II, fireball Nikki Hill and American musician Rich Robinson. Their combined musical powers will make sure Mumbai's favourite annual blue period ends on a high note.
