Fifty grams of MD powder was recovered from the peddler, Sarfaraz Memon, 34. The complainant told the police that Memon had initially provided him the drug free of cost. But when he got addicted to it, Memon started quoting a high price for the drug.
Memon is a resident of Dharti Gully in Parel. The complainant had gone to Parel in June 2014 for an Urs procession. He got introduced to Memon who provided him with MD powder free of cost on two to three occasions. The complainant started mixing the powder with paan masala and consuming it. As time passed, he started feeling uneasy if he did not get his fix. Memon then started charging him Rs 1500 for 1gm of the MD powder.
"The complainant's health started to deteriorate. When he complained to Memon about the MD powder, the latter rebuked him and said that the drug gave strength to its consumers," a police official said. Besides the complainant and a friend of his, Memon had started supplying MD powder to residents of Dharti Gully in Parel where he operated from. Several residents had got hooked to the drug.
On receiving complaints, the Bhoiwada police laid a trap at Dharti Gully. After the complainant pointed out where Memon was standing close to a restaurant, the police team pounced on him. Memon has been booked under section 328 of IPC and the cops are inquiring whom he procured the drugs from.
