"The fire, which started around 10.30pm, spread from the 37th floor to the 42nd floor and terrace, where construction material was stocked. No casualty was reported," an official said. Residents of the area said the fire might have started from sky lanterns that floated too close to the building. Assistant municipal commissioner D P Jain said, "We evacuated about 500 people from a nearby slum as tarpaulin, which had caught fire, had started falling to the ground. The blaze was finally doused around 6am."
But the most worrying fact was that though eight fire engines, three ambulances and eight policemen reached the spot, they could not start operation immediately as the fire brigade did not have a ladder that reached 37 floors. The fire brigade has ladders that can reach only up to 23 floors. Deputy chief fire officer P S Rahangdale admitted, "The fire brigade has ladders that can reach up to 70metres or 23 floors. We have proposed to buy a ladder that can go up to 90 metres or 30 floors."
A fire official said a highrise is supposed to have a system on the compound to tackle a blaze from inside. " As this highrise is under construction, such a system was not yet installed," he said. "But precautionary measures should have been there in this unfinished building."
