Coast guard worried about threat posed by trawlers

MUMBAI: In the wake of the December 31 operation in which a terror boat was intercepted on the outskirts of Porbunder in Gujarat, senior officials of the Indian Coast Guard western region met chief secretary Swadheen Kshatriya to discuss issues concerning coastal security.

Sources said coast guard officials expressed concern over non-cooperation from tandels (in charge of fishing boats) and trawler owners. The issues discussed ranged from fishermen not carrying proper identification while sailing to illegally engaging cheap Nepalese or Bangladeshi labourers for trawlers and smuggling. Kshatriya assured to resolve some of the issues.

"It was a routine meeting to discuss various issues pertaining to coastal security. In the recent years, there have been several inputs from various central agencies regarding infiltration and smuggling of diesel, electronic goods and narcotics. If we do not curb these illegal activities, we fear terrorists may sneak into the country using these as bait," said an officer.

Officials said recently they had, in a joint operation, arrested diesel mafia don and murder accused Mohammed Ali for allegedly attempting to smuggle red sanders to Dubai through the sea route, and earlier, busted several diesel and electronic goods smuggling attempts.

The coast guard pointed out that there are 72 landing points in and around Mumbai and most of them are abandoned.
