MUMBAI: Children and animal welfare workers of the BirdHelpline group held several rallies in different parts of south Mumbai on Sunday to raise awareness about the harmful effects of kite flying for the birds in the festival of Makar Sankranti, which is on January 14.

"Nearly 5000 persons pledged their support that they will personally not fly kites since it can harm or even kill birds. So we received a very positive and enthusiastic response to our rallies today,'' said activist Harsh Shah of BirdHelpline.

Every year, several hundreds of birds like pigeons, sparrows, eagles, cuckoos, pariah kites, parrots and mainas among others are either seriously injured or killed after being cut by the sharp manja thread used to fly kites. Many birds also get entangled in the mesh of thread hanging from tree branches and other spots. That is why activists are urging citizens not to fly kites during Makar Sankranti.
