MUMBAI: Controversial godman Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh's film 'Messenger of God (MSG)' will have to defer its planned release of January 16 after a review committee of the Censor Board declined to grant clearance on Monday. The film depicts the founder of Haryana's Dera Sachcha Sauda cult as a "miracle man who can cure terminal diseases".

The review committee has referred the picture to an appellate tribunal in Delhi. Earlier the examining committee had refused to clear the film.

Mumbai Censor Board official Nandini Sardesai chaired the seven-member review committee which unanimously agreed to not take a decision after seeing the film on Monday. She said, "We have neither rejected nor passed the film. We have referred it to the Film Certification Appellate Tribunal in New Delhi. All of us on the review committee, including a Sikh lady, unanimously felt that 'MSG' can spread obscurantism and may cause law and order problems."

Dera spokesperson Aditya Insan did not respond to calls for comment. It is reported that the Dera is pleading its case at the "highest level" in government. Representatives of Dera Sachcha Sauda reportedly offered to edit those portions that the censors found unacceptable but officials explained that a film is seen in its entirety.
