Another monorail rake begins service

MUMBAI: Monorail commuters can expect a smoother ride even if a rake has to be withdrawn due to an emergency as the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has pressed into services another car from January 12.

Many services on the Chembur-Wadala line had to be suspended due to technical problems with the rakes. The shortage of standby rakes used to lead to suspension of services on the route for many hours.

A senor MMRDA official said, "We have introduced a rake a few days back and another will be pressed into service next month, which will total up to seven.'' Only two of the five trains were fit for services in October.

An MMRDA official said, "With seven rakes, there will not be any problem in running smooth services even if one is on standby and another gets damaged due to technical failure."

The official also said failures related to rakes, power supply and other rolling stock material, will subside as MMRDA has ordered Scomi to improve maintenance.

The monorail operates on the 8.8km Chembur-Wadala corridor; in the second phase, expected by December, trains will travel up to Jacob Circle.
