MUMBAI: A waiter who was caught stealing cash allegedly assaulted his employer's wife at Palghar on Sunday.

Bipinkul Thapa (23), originally from Nepal, was employed in a beer bar at Satpati in Palghar six months ago. The owner Ramesh Dhavne allowed Thapa, who claimed to be an orphan, to stay in the bar.

Soon he gained Dhavne's confidence and visited his home for household work. On Sunday when Dhavne was in the bar, Thapa came to his employer's home and tried to steal cash kept in the cupboard.

Dhavne's wife Usha caught Thapa red handed and slapped him. Thapa pulled out a sharp weapon and assaulted Usha on the head and then tried to strangulate her. Usha raised and alarm which alerted the neighbours.

He was handed over to the police and has been booked under section 324 (assault) of the IPC and has been remanded to police custody.

Police said that Dhavne had not carried out the police verification of Thapa before employing him.
