Not averse to any relief new govt may offer Mumbai's Campa Cola society residents: SC

MUMBAI: The Supreme Court once again offered a glimmer of hope for the beleaguered residents of Campa Cola society in Worli, Mumbai where the fate of over 100 illegal flats hangs in the balance. An SC bench of Justices S J Mukhopadhaya and Sharad Bobde said it would "not be averse to any relief that the new government in Maharashtra may offer the residents, if it does."

The residents' lawyer Kamini Jaiswal sought an adjournment when the matter regarding their plea for a clarification of the earlier apex court order came up in court for a hearing. She sought an adjournment since their senior counsel Shanti Bhushan was unable to make it to the court on Monday.

The SC had last year upheld the demolition notice issued by the BMC years ago to the society. The residents sought a clarification on the possible actions that the BMC could take and said regularization is a possibility especially since the civic body itself had earlier agreed to it and had even accepted the most of the regularization fee.

But at the last hearing the last month the BMC told the Supreme Court that it may not be possible to regularize Campa Cola Compound buildings. The apex court had thus given gave Campa Cola residents two weeks time to file a reply to the written reply which the BMC had submitted.

On Monday, the SC said if the new government which is yet to be formed in Maharashtra offers any relief to Campa Cola residents, it would not averse to any such relief.

Jaiswal clarified that the residents were not seeking an adjournment because they were waiting for the new government formation.

But with the SC adjourning the matter to next Monday now, the development comes as a relief to the residents whose hopes could now rest on the new BJP-led government in the state.
