Gandhis skip Nandurbar in poll campaign

MUMBAI: For the first time in recent political history, the Gandhi family has skipped Nandurbar district while launching the Congress campaign for the LokSabha and assembly elections.

Former Prime Ministers Indira and Rajeev Gandhi, and Congress president Sonia Gandhi would always start the Maharashtra campaign for the Lok Sabha or assembly polls from the tribal Nandurbar district.

When the 2014 Lok Sabha polls were declared, Congress leader Manikrao Gavit, who has represented the Nandurbar parliamentary constituency since 1981, was expecting either Sonia or Rahul Gandhi to launch the party's campaign from Nandurbar. "We were expecting both Sonia and Rahul to launch party's campaign from Nandurbar. In fact, it was a tradition. However, both were conspicuous by their absence from the area during the entire Lok Sabha campaign,'' a senior Congress leader told TOI.

The Congress leader said the Gandhis' meeting at Nandurbar was cancelled at the last minute without assigning any reason. Gavit lost to BJP nominee Heena Gavit by a huge margin. Heena, daughter of the then state minister for medical education Vijaykumar Gavit, joined the BJP a week before the Lok Sabha polls. However, Narendra Modi addressed meetings in Nandurbar and a few districts in North Maharashtra.

For the upcoming state assembly polls too, the Gandhis have remained conspicuously absent from the entire region. On the contrary, Modi has stormed north Maharashtra, with a series of rallies in Nandurbar and surrounding areas.

A Congress leader said the Gandhis' absence was surprising as Nandurbar was important for the Congress. In fact, the UPA government launched the Aadhar card scheme in Nandurbar, an event attended by Sonia and then Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. "We lost in the Lok Sabha polls, now it seems we will give the tribal belt to the BJP on a platter,'' he said.
