They began by putting banners in their society compound and stickers on their cars. They visited Adarsh Garden and another park behind Inorbit Mall, urging people to register their presence at the ballot even if they did not favour any of the parties or candidates contesting the election. The movement gathered pace on WhatsApp as well. Nitin Bhende, coordinator of the association said, "Not enough people are aware of the power of NOTA.
Candidates can actually be debarred from contesting an election in that constituency for life. We need to get rid of corrupt politicians and this is the best way to reject them.'' The residents were inspired by social activist Anna Hazare who fought long and hard for 10 years to get this option included on the ballot paper. "Earlier, if voters had to reject all the candidates in their constituency they had to sign an application saying so.
Since Anna's movement, the NOTA option is now enlisted on the EVM,'' says Bhende. "Around six percent of voters used the NOTA option during the recent Lok Sabha election and we feel the figure could rise to 15% during this assembly election."
