MUMBAI: Xavier Almeida, one of the most prominent commentators of rink hockey and rink football tournaments across gymkhanas, clubs and schools for the past 25 years, passed away on September 8. Almeida (74) died at Lilavati Hospital, Bandra after a brief illness.

Unlike regular football and hockey, the rink version has five players to a side and is played on a smaller court. It is extremely popular with schools and gymkhanas in Mumbai.

Players and friends remember Almeida for his prodigious memory, no-nonsense manner, total command of the sport and his unfailing enthusiasm.Former India hockey captain Joaquim Carvalho recalled him as a sterling commentator while former Olympian Merwyn Fernandes said, "It's a sad day for everybody here at Willingdon Sports Club, Santa Cruz. It is hard to imagine not having Xavier around. He lived life on his own terms. We will miss him very much"

Derrick Drego, joint outdoor sports secretary of Bandra Gymkhana, says, "Almeida's voice was soaked in adrenalin. His commentary that was so infectious that it created ripples of excitement among spectators. Without doubt, he is the finest broadcaster that rink hockey and football will ever know."

The last rites were performed on September 9.
