MUMBAI: A 56-year-old radiographer from the civic tuberculosis hospital in Sewri died on Thursday due to drug-resistant TB.

Sewri TB Hospital's medical superintendent Dr R Nanavre said that the employee, who was on long leave, was admitted to hospital on Thursday after he turned breathless and passed away the next day.

While BMC staff union maintained that he is the fourth employee to succumb to TB this year, hospital authorities said he was the second. BMC statistics show that 42 hospital employees, including doctors, nurses and ward boys have succumbed to TB since 2005.

The radiographer, a long-term diabetes patient, was diagnosed with TB in 2003. He suffered a relapse in October 2013 and was diagnosed with multi-drug-resistant TB in April. A senior doctor from the hospital said the patient had not been regular with taking medicines.
