A series of suicides through the weekend has brought to the fore once again the city's fragile emotional health.

While one woman and a man ended their lives on Monday, the rest of the suicides took place over the weekend. The triggers ranged from career trouble to depression. In three cases the reason was not clear.

According to the National Crimes Record Bureau figures for 2012, Mumbai registered 1200 cases of suicides. In 2013, the number jumped to 1322. There are no figures available for 2014. However, experts say that an increase in the number of calls received by suicide helplines indicates that the numbers have increased.

All three of Mumbai's most-called helplines too have registered a spike. The Wandhrewala foundation's suicide helpline in Powai has seen the average number of calls increasing to 1400 a month, as compared to 1200 in 2012. Senior vice-president Hyacinth Pereira said that this month they have already crossed 1200 calls and they are estimating an average of 1700 till the end of the month.

The Tata Institute of Social Science's 12-hour helpline I-Call has also seen surge. "Over the last two years, the calls we get per month have doubled and are now around 500-600 a month, of whom at least 150 are in severe emotional distress, and vulnerable to suicide. In the same period, I have seen the number of emails from people who are truly desperate, who are on the brink, increase from 5-10 a month to at least 70-80 a month," said Paras Sharma, programme co-ordinator, of the I-Call psychosocial helpline at TISS.

Psychiatrist Dr Harish Shetty said that people are disturbed with the broken connections. "There is no one to talk and discuss the feelings. The distressed individuals mull over their own feelings and have no choice but to opt for the last step," said Shetty.

Aasra, another 24X7 suicide helpline in the city is too flooded with calls from those feeling 'disconnected' and 'low'. The helpline saw an average calls of 10,500 in 2012. The number went up to 15,581 in 2013. "This year, the average calls have already touched 14216 and counting," said Aasra's director Johnson Thomas.
