Political comeback for Narayan Rane, Ashok Chavan

MUMBAI: It is a political rehabilitation of sorts for Narayan Rane and Ashok Chavan with Congress president Sonia Gandhi on Wednesday appointing the industries minister as the head of the campaign committee and the former chief minister as the chairman of the coordination committee. Former Union home minister Sushilkumar Shinde will head the manifesto committee.

The move assumes importance, especially for Rane and Ashok Chavan, both known detractors of chief minister Prithviraj Chavan. When Rane withdrew his resignation from cabinet—which he filed in rebelion against the CM—he had been assured that besides an additional portfolio, he will be considered for an important organizational assignment. As promised, Rane has also been granted the additional portfolio of mining, which was earlier attached to the industries department. For Ashok Chavan, this appointment came after two judicial orders in his favour, which paved the way for his comeback.

On July 17, Rane revolted against Prithviraj Chavan's leadership, saying it would not be possible for the Congress to retain power in the state under him. He quit the cabinet, demanding a change in leadership. Rane's contention was that in 2005, when he joined the Congress, he was assured the CM's post in future and that all the legislators, who joined with him, would also be offered key assignments. But Rane had alleged that in the last 10 years, the Congress failed to keep its promise. With party president Sonia Gandhi not initially responding to him quitting the cabinet, Rane knocked on the CM's doors, looking for a compromise formula.

He had then reportedly urged Prithviraj Chavan to consider him for an organizational assignment and an additional portfolio. According to a senior Congress leader, it was agreed that only after Rane withdrew his resignation would he be considered for the organizational assignment. Accordingly, Rane took back his resignation a week ago.

Ever since Ashok Chavan was locked in the Adarsh controversy, he had been sidelined. He was also replaced as CM by Prithviraj Chavan. For the Lok Sabha polls, he was nominated from Nanded and despite the Modi wave across the country, he managed to win the seat by a huge margin. But the two cases—one initiated by the Election Commission (EC) and the other by the CBI in the Adarsh case—remained a thorn in his path. Much to his relief, the Bombay high court has stayed the trial against him in the Adarsh case and the Delhi high court also stayed the disqualification proceedings initiated against him by the EC.

For Shinde, it was a lottery of a different kind. After his defeat in the Lok Sabha polls, he was almost being ignored for any important organizational role. But in view of his loyalty to the Gandhi family, he has been appointed the chairman of the manifesto committee.
