MUMBAI: A decision on the hike in taxi and auto-rickshaw fares in Mumbai was on Thursday postponed for another 10 days with the Bombay high court adjourning the case to July 28, 2014. A division bench of Justice Abhay Oka and Justice A S Chandurkar allowed consumer rights body Mumbai Grahak Panchayat time to make changes in its public interest litigation to challenge the new Rs 2 proposed fare hike.

Earlier this month the Maharashtra government had moved the court with its plans to raise auto and taxi fares in Mumbai and its suburbs by Rs 2 from July 10. According to the proposal by Mumbai Metropolitan Region Transport Authority (MMRTA) the minimum auto fare should be revised to Rs 17 from the existing Rs 15, while the minimum taxi fare should be raised to Rs 21 from Rs 19. Advocate general Darius Khambata told the court that a fare hike had been due as the last one had been carried out two years ago in 2012.

The last round of fare hike happened in October 2012 based on the one-man Hakim committee's report. The MGP-a consumer rights body-had then challenged the fare hike as well as the Hakim committee's report.
