Western Railway cracks whip on ticketless travellers, recovers Rs 11 crore fines

MUMBAI: The Western Railway recently registered 2.33 lakh cases of ticketless travelling and apprehending those with unbooked luggage, and recovered Rs 11 crore in fines.

A WR official said that the checks were conducted mainly in May. "During the month, 1,862 cases of illegal transfer of reserved tickets were detected and an amount of approximately Rs 20 lakh was recovered. Our enforcement teams also caught 1,255 beggars and unauthorized hawkers, evicted them and imposed fines. Ninety persons were sent to jail,'' the official said.

During May, 180 checks were conducted against touts and other anti-social elements. As a result, 253 persons were apprehended and prosecuted and fined under various sections of Railways Act and 12 persons were sent behind bars, officials said.

Senior WR officials have appealed to all rail users to buy proper railway ticket and travel with dignity.
