MUMBAI: Resentment is brewing among residents of Vasai region as they experience power cut during the night.

Residents have complained of power cuts throughout the night in Vasai, Nalasopara and Virar since the past few days. The electricity goes off in the night and power is back only in the day. On Monday, the Shiv Sena took a morcha to the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) office in Virar to protest against the power cuts.

Residents of villages in Vasai alleged that while they had to do without power throughout the night, the street lights are left on during the day, resulting in massive wastage of electricity. On May 2, residents of Pragati Nagar in Nalasopara (east) had resorted to rasta roko and had pelted stones on policemen over the frequent power cuts.

The police had to open fire in the air to disperse the crowd.

The residents are already reeling under severe water scarcity since the past two months. Residents alleged that they have been facing water and electricity problems ever since the Bahujan Vikas Aghadi (BVA) party, that has a hold in the Vasai region, lost the recent Lok Sabha polls. "A night without electricity means no sleep and that ruins the entire next day," said a Virar resident Sudhir Kumar.

Residents said that if the power crises continues, it will be a matter of time before people get on to the streets again.
