Mumbai's first public 'vertical garden' built to pay tribute to Gopinath Munde

MUMBAI: The ugly sight of Irla Nullah has been masked by the city's first 'vertical garden' to have been built at a public location. Thousands of flower pots have been stacked above one another in the shape of a butterfly, beautified with 3,000 live plants in green and purple.

Inspired by the Shanghai model, Andheri corporator Ameet Satam undertook the initiative at a cost of Rs 15 lakh."Not just Mumbai, in fact, this is likely India's first vertical garden that has been built in a public place.

One occasionally sees this novelty in five-star hotels or in luxury homes. Each plant nestles in a separate flower pot which is fitted with a drip irrigation system that releases water for 25 minutes each day," he said.

BJP stalwart MP Gopinath Munde was to inaugurate this live installation. "After his untimely death, it has taken the shape of a tribute to him," said Satam, who was Munde's close associate for many years.

Rather like a hoarding, a metal frame has been erected to mask one flank of Irla Nullah from view. The pots have been fastened to this frame."Passersby have been halting their cars to take pictures of the beautiful duranta, chlorophytus, asparagus and red reed. Only we are hoping the garden will not become the target of vandals so we have posted a watchman by night. We plan to light it up this weekend," said Satam's aide Ambarish Lotlikar.

Satam could have prepared this installation at lesser cost and risk by simply using artificial plants but he chose to use live greens to brighten the environment.
