Fire in Mumbai's CST building, 35 rescued

MUMBAI: A fire broke out in a building at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST) station here this evening but no casualty has been reported so far, fire officials said.

The blaze started on the fifth floor of the new administrative building of the Central Railway at DN Road.

Eight fire tenders were rushed to the spot, according to fire brigade officials.

35 railways staffers have been rescued from the building.

Narendra Patil, chief public relations officer, central railways, said, "There are several offices on the fifth floor of the administrative building, but as of now the fire has been brought under control."

ACP Krishna Prakash confirmed no causalities. Meanwhile, the suburban trains running from platform no. 1 were suspended as a precautionary measure.

"We got a call at about 5pm and we immediately pressed four fire tenders into service. Thereafter, the fire was upgraded one notch to Grade 2 and a total of eight fire tenders, snorkels and ambulances have now been rushed to the spot," an official said.

Vehicular traffic on the JJ flyover has been halted temporarily and services of few trains in the Suburban Line have also been affected, they said.

The cause of the blaze has not been ascertained yet and efforts are on to evacuate the officials working in the building, the official added.

Traffic cops also issued diversions to unclog the DN road stretch where massive traffic snarls were reported.

The following diversions were issued:

* From Bhatia baug junction-turn towards P D'Mello Road

* From Hajarimal Somani Road at CST towards Metro Cinema junction

* From CST to Metro Cinema junction

* From OCS to Metro Cinema junction

* From PK Wines no entry to city police commissioner's office side

* Chakala towards P D'Mello Road side

"Roads are being cleared for fire tenders to pass by. Additional manpower has been deployed," said additional police commissioner, traffic, Qaiser Khalid. Traffic movement was restored by 7.15pm on DN Road.
