MUMBAI: A senior officer of state Sales tax department was caught by the anti corruption bureau (ACB) red handed while accepting a bribe of Rs 4,000 from a garment trader in South Mumbai on Wednesday. Interestingly, a few hours before the trap, the ACB office by mistake instead of calling up complainant had called up the accused sales tax officer Shivshankar Gaikwad asking him as to why he did not come to the ACB office for the trap. Yet, sources said that Gaikwad who is a class one officer failed to smell the rat and fell into the ACB net.
According to the ACB, Gaikwad last week visited complainant's office and summoned him to sales tax office. Gaikwad inquired as to why his wife's signature was missing in the sales receipt as was the partner in the firm. Gaikwad demanded a sum of Rs 10,000 to turn a blind eye. After much bargaining the amount was brought down to Rs 5,000. On Wednesday no sooner did Gaikwad accepted the amount, the ACB caught him.
