Rs 6cr jewel heist: Driver’s aides may be outsiders

MUMBAI: Officers probing the Rs 6-crore heist of gold and diamonds, in which the driver provided by a security agency to a logistics firm was involved, suspect the five aides of the accused came from outside the city.

On not finding the main accused, driver Udaybhan Singh, at his Vasai home or UP hometown, the Kasturba Marg police feel he left Mumbai shortly after the robbery. On Friday, while ferrying four employees of SR Security Agency with gold and diamonds to the BKC, Singh stopped the van at Borivli and five of his aides barged in and hit the other occupants. Singh drove the van to Virar where he and his aides decamped with the loot.

"Singh's wife has also vanished. He has either sent her to a safe place or she could be with him," said senior inspector Bharat Worlikar, who will submit a report to the police chief after an inquiry on how the security agency hired Singh without a background check. The agency may lose its licence to operate.

Police said the van's occupants were not given a clean chit due to discrepancies in their version of sequence of events.
