MUMBAI: A 2-metre long portion of Pedder Road caved in at the Gamadia junction on Thursday morning, leading to huge traffic snarls on the key stretch in south Mumbai throughout the day.

Officials said that the cave-in happened after a century old stormwater drain under the road gave away.

Civic officials said that work to repair the 7.5-metre-long drain has started and will be completed by Friday morning.

The road that caved in on Peddar Road is near playback singer Lata Mangeshkar's residence 'Prabhu Kunj'.

While the BMC assured that the drain would be fixed by Friday, a senior civic official said it would take at least two days to re-surface the affected area. "The underground utilities are the main reason for these cave-ins. These utilities are rotten and need replacement, their life span is over.

Following the road cave-in at Peddar Road, north-bound traffic was severely affected on Thursday. Traffic jams started to build up right from 11.30am, motorists said.
