No plans for Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru’s 50th death anniversary

MUMBAI: Way back in 1967, the nation was still grieving the loss of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru when a poignant tribute by Mohammed Rafi opened up a wound that was still raw. The 'Naunihal' song 'Meri awaaz suno, pyar ka raag suno', which was picturised on Nehru's funeral procession, showed millions of tearful Indians accompanying his bier. This was an era when leaders were distinct from politicians.

Tuesday, May 27, marks the 50th death anniversary of Pandit Nehru. India's first prime minister passed away this day in 1964. However, the passage of time and the radically altered political scenario in the Modi era have ensured that no commemoration is planned in Mumbai. Neither the Congress party nor Nehru Centre nor Khilafat House have announced programmes to celebrate their founder-patron-mentor. Each told TOI they would prepare a blueprint shortly.

Interestingly, Khilafat Committee trustee Sarfaraz Arzoo doubted whether the Nehruvian legacy of secularism, socialism and inclusive development could be distinctly attributed to this leader alone. "We first need to identify what the Nehruvian ideology involves. These ideals are common to all nation builders. Only the idea of strengthening the public sector was unique to his era. He described PSUs as the temples of modern India," Arzoo said.

Yet the average Indian nurtures an abiding interest and faith in Nehru, one that has withstood the ravages of time and survived scepticism and disillusionment. His books continue to draw a steady readership across age, community and class. P M Shenvi, the manager of Strand Bookstore in Fort, says, "Panditji's 'Discovery of India', which he wrote in 1946, as well as 'Glimpses of World History' that was written in 1934-35, still find committed buyers. Both books have gone into reprint several times. Other titles including 'Letters From a Father to His Daughter' which he wrote to Indira Gandhi from prison, as well as his autobiography, are also read though in fewer numbers."

Doordarshan continues to telecast the magnum opus 'Bharat Ek Khoj' that is a television adaptation of 'Discovery of India' every week to this day.
