MUMBAI: To prevent illegal sand mining, activists have demanded that sand be tracked electronically from the extraction point to the transport permits and octroi nakas to building sites, to ensure excess sand is not used.

Activist Sumaira Abdulali who has filed an appeal before the National Green Tribunal's Pune bench for a ban on sand mining in CRZ areas has asked the tribunal to direct the government to ensure that local self-government bodies do not issue Occupation Certificates to buildings unless a full disclosure of the quantity of sand used is made.

In her affidavit, Abdulali has said the illegally mined sand not be auctioned and rather be put back into the creek or beach from where it had been extracted.

"Mining is rampant due to lack of effective implementation of various bans," Abdulali said, demanding that the Maharashtra Maritime Board be made accountable as it plays a pivotal role in regulating mining. The final order in the case is expected by month-end.
