MUMBAI: An assistant engineer of the Maharashtra State Electricity Board (MSEB) from Talasari in Thane district has been arrested for accepting a bribe from an industrial consumer for a new connection.

The Thane Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) on Tuesday arrested Sunil Kumawat (42) while accepting Rs 17,000 from the complainant. Kumawat had demanded the money from the complainant who had applied for a new electricity connection for his unit at Achchad in Talasari.

The complainant had made several rounds to the MSEB office for the connection. After keeping him hanging for months, Kumawat demanded Rs 25,000. The complainant agreed to pay the first installment of Rs 17,000 and informed the ACB. He promised to pay the second instalment after the connection was activated. Kumawat had agreed.

The police raided Kumawat's Nashik home and found several incriminating document. His flat in the MSEB staff colony in Talasari was also checked. He has been arrested under the Prevention of Corruption Act and has been remanded to police custody till April 21 by the Palghar court.
