MUMBAI: A 34-year-old ragpicker was arrested by the Dahisar police on Thursday morning for sexually assaulting his daughter. The 10-year-old victim lived on the footpath with her father and two younger siblings. Her mother had separated from her father seven years ago.

"The victim had run away from home last year. Then in December 2013, the railway police found her in Kalyan and sent her to the shelter for children at Dongri. On April 15, she told an officer at the shelter about being sexually assaulted by her father. Her statement was recorded and sent to the MHB Colony police station, where she used to stay at the time of the offence," said ACP (Dahisar division) Dilip Roopvate. "It was discovered that the offence had occurred in an open space below the Link Road flyover at Anand Nagar, Dahisar East. The MHB Colony police then transferred the case to the Dahisar police station."

On the basis of the complaint, the victim's father was arrested at around 10.30am on Monday. He was booked under sections 376 and 354 (d) of IPC besides sections 4 and 8 of Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act. He will be produced before a sessions court at Dindoshi.
