Faced with stiff resistance from people, the civic officials had to put off their evacuation drive at Shivaji Nagar, Bandra East on Tuesday.
According to the civic officials, there are total 17 municipal buildings and a school built in 1972 at Shivaji Nagar. Of them, building number 1 to 5 and 7 have been declared dilapidated by the civic consultants, which has also been approved by the BMC technical advisory committee.
Civic officials from H-East ward went to building number 3, in which 16 families are staying, with a police bandobast asking the residents to vacate the structure. However, they had to retract following a strong opposition from local residents.
Civic officials blamed the inadequate police force for the failure of evacuation drive. "There were not enough policemen for the eviction operations. Had we persisted, there would have been law and order problem. We have asked the police officials to provide sufficient security for the next eviction drive," said a civic official.
Following the series of building collapse incidents in the city, the BMC has undertaken eviction drive of dilapidated buildings across the city. However, at several places its attempts have been opposed by the local residents, under the pretext that either the structural stability report of their buildings is not correct or they will have to shift to faraway places.
"We had issued many notices to residents to vacate dilapidated buildings at Shivaji Nagar. We had even offered alternate accommodation to them in western suburbs. But at earlier occasion too, our efforts to severe their water and electricity connections were thwarted by local residents," said an official from the H-East ward.
