MUMBAI: The second phase of placements at the Indian Institute of Technology-Bombay (IIT-B) began on Monday. Around 900 students from the batch of 1,600 candidates had been placed in the first phase, which ended on December 19.

The institute is expecting 500 more to sit through the placement process in the second phase, which will go on till the end of the term. Around five candidates were placed on the first day of the second phase.

Tata Steel, Godrej and Coal India are expected to come to the campus in this phase, said professor in charge of placements Avijit Chatterjee.

He said the companies need not register in this phase. "The institute has a good line-up of companies," he said.

While 700 students of the 1,600 who registered for placements are still waiting for jobs, not all of them would be sitting for interviews, said the professor. "Some will go for higher studies," he said.

Around 260 companies had visited the campus in the first phase and most of them made multiple job offers. Reputable organizations from Europe, Japan, Korea, West Asia, Singapore, Taiwan and the US visited IIT-B this year. The highest offer was made by Oracle.
