Reserve Bank of India governor Raghuram Rajan and captains of Indian industry seemed to unanimously beat the blues of a crawling Indian economy on Sunday as they participated in the 11th Mumbai Marathon. Some of them ran for charity, some for solidarity, some for fitness and some simply for the joy of running.

The who's who of India Inc—Anil Ambani of Reliance Group, Gagan Banga of IndiaBulls, Rashesh Shah of Edelweiss, N Chandrasekaran of TCS, and Y M Deosthalee of L&T—were out, beating earlier records or matching past timings.

Ambani completed the marathon two minutes before his last year's record. "I have run the Mumbai half marathon since its inception and it has always been exhilarating. My timing in this run was one hour 37 minutes and 11 seconds," Ambani said. His wife Tina Ambani, chairperson of Harmony Foundation, cheered him. "My husband loves running as he gets all his energy levels from there," said Tina.

Banga, who has participated in marathons across the globe, maintained his time of 3 hours 58 minutes in completing the full marathon. "It was very hot, but otherwise the arrangements were on a par with global standards."

Like Banga, Shah has also taken part in international marathons; he completed the half marathon in less than 2 hours; last year, his timing was 2.05 hours. "I just came running across TCS' Chandrasekaran. It's good to see so many people from the industry. The crowd support was enormous," said Shah. A banker said, "It's good to see RBI governor running along with you. He didn't seem to be worried at all about what he is going to do with the rates in the monetary policy next Tuesday." A total of 110 employees of market regulator Sebi participated in the marathon.

Sanjeev Mantri, head of the rural and inclusive banking at ICICI Bank, ran the full marathon to support the sports institute of his coach Deepak Londhe, who trains young sportspersons from the state's rural and tribal areas. But some regulars such as HDFC chairman Deepak Parekh, Mahindra Group chairman Anand Mahindra, Sajjan Jindal of JSW Steel, Vijay Mallya's son Siddhartha Mallya were missing this year.
