Mira-Bhayander hawkers demand implementation of national policy on street vending

MUMBAI: Hawkers in the Mira-Bhayander region on Friday took out a morcha to the civic headquarters in Bhayander to protest against the non-implementation of the national policy on urban street vendors.

The hawkers under the banner of Azad Hawkers Union alleged that the Mira Bhayander Municipal Corporation (MBMC) was harassing, fining and confiscating the goods of hawkers despite a Supreme court order restraining states and union territories from taking action against hawkers before the implementation of the National Policy on Urban Street Vendors, 2009.

The central government had asked civic bodies to demarcate hawking and non-hawking zones for vendors. The policy included setting up of vendors committees to decide on the hawking and non-hawking zones.

Hawkers marched to the MBMC headquarters and demanded implementation of the policy. They said that hawkers on busy roads like B P Road, Navghar Road and P K Road were harassed by the civic staff. Hawkers alleged that while they were fined Rs 35 to Rs 50, they were given receipts of Rs 20.

The Supreme court had in September last year restrained states from taking on vendors before putting the policy in place.
