MUMBAI: The state cabinet is likely to take a call on Wednesday on reducing its taxes and the regulatory asset charges of the power utilities to reduce the bill burden on consumers, said a top Congress source.

There are indications that up to 15-20% reduction in tariff is possible if taxes are withdrawn and the government grants some subsidy to the power suppliers, as in Delhi.

On Monday evening, party MPs protesting the high cost of electricity in the city met CM Prithviraj Chavan. Earlier, MPs Sanjay Nirupam and Priya Dutt led a protest at a Reliance Infra office in Kandivli, where Nirupam gave the firm till Saturday to come out with a plan to reduce tariff, perhaps the highest in the country.

An analysis showed Mumbaikars pay the highest per unit price for power with the exception of Kolkata. Reliance Infra subscribers pay Rs 7.68 per unit, over a rupee more than Rs 6.28 in Kolkata.
