Memorable insights came from colleagues who had been friends or classmates before embarking on a professional journey alongside the actor.
Director Raman Kumar, who made 'Saath Saath' with Shaikh, said the artiste saved a day or two every month to travel to mofussil areas of Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Bihar as ambassador for Unicef's anti-polio campaign. Shaikh Sahab would go to schools, meet parents door-to-door in modest living quarters, and visit respected leaders of the minority community urging them to overcome prejudice and bring their children to be vaccinated. He had made a commitment and honoured it until the end.
"Shaikh's social work was such a major part of his life that its volume probably outstrips his entire body of work in cinema. Yet he kept it silent and discreet, and never allowed it to creep into his films either. 'Jaise bolte the waise jeete the'," said the director. An effusive burst of praise followed, and the word that repeatedly sprang to Ramanji's lips as he described his friend of five decades was "genuineness".
In the late 1960s, Shaikh was a student of St Xavier's College while Kumar wore the colours of the rival Khalsa College. "We were competitors then, but no man ever helped his competitors the way Farooque did. Years later when we became professionals, I found he was so easy to work with -- but it was very difficult to get him to say yes to a project," Ramanji smiled. "That is the reason we could not do television together. He wanted to see a complete script before approving a role, and which TV channel follows that culture."
Describing Shaikh as a director's delight, he recalled how 'Saath Saath' was being shot in a time when 'Chashme Buddoor' had just released. "We would instruct Farooque and Deepti to quickly hop on a bus and buy a ticket while we would shoot from the back. He never grudged us anything or threw airs such was his genuineness."
Shaikh Sahab's directors and co-actors always thought of him as a blithe spirit who had no troubles because he did not express them. Each narrative at Thursday's memorial ended up painting the portrait of a fiercely private individual who was quick to size up other people's discomfort and silently did everything within his power to ease their troubles, but never revealed the chink in his armour even to those who had known him for decades.
Ramanji said, "On the rare occasion that one saw Farooque Shaikh became angry, it had to do with some social injustice that was bothering him. I have never seen him become sad over any personal matter."
