MUMBAI: The state forest officials of the Panvel-Raigad range have arrested an 85-year-old tribal from Karjat, near Matheran, for recently conspiring to kill three leopards in order to sell the skin and nails in the illegal wildlife market.

The accused tribal man, Goma Hari Vir (85), of Varosa Navinwadi in Karjat, was reportedly the main mastermind behind the systematic poisoning of a female leopard and her two cubs in the local region. With the latest arrest of the tribal, the total number of accused nabbed by the forest department in this case goes up to nine.

The 85-year-old tribal, Goma, was in fact the main conspirator behind the killing of the leopards; but he had smartly eluded the police and forest officials by going into hiding. After his recent arrest, he told us that the he had hatched the plan to poison the leopards with an insecticide, as they had earlier killed a couple of his sheep and goats,'' said the Assistant Conservator of Forests in Panvel, K G Alurkar.

He added that prior to the arrest of Goma, eight other men from the region were nabbed for trying to sell one leopard skin and several nails. As Goma had used a strong insecticide (Endosulphan) to poison the female leopard and her two cubs, the skin of two of the animals was rendered useless for the poachers as the chemical had quickly deteriorated it. However, one leopard cub which was less affected, was quickly skinned and de-nailed by the culprits,'' said Alurkar.

Despite his old age, the octogenarian tribal is reportedly quite fit and agile. All the nine accused have been booked under the Wildlife (Protection) Act of 1972 and the Indian Forest Act of 1927.

The range forest officials said that this successful detection of leopard deaths and the arrests has sent a strong message in the entire Raigad district of severe consequences to be faced for poaching wild and protected animals.

The accused were trying to sell the leopard skin for Rs 1.5 lakh, while cost of leopard nails was fixed at Rs 900 per piece.

Names of the other eight accused are: Deepak Doirfode (32) of Karjat, Bharat Karande (33) of Karjat, Bharat Chaudhary (30) of Khalapur, Hari Hindola (33) of Khalapur, Santosh Vare (22) of Khalapur, Ravi Mengal (23) of Khalapur, Lahu Mengal (24) of Khalapur, and Anant Daroda (22) also of Khalapur.

Two motorcycles and sharp knives used to skin the leopards was also recovered from the accused persons.

Panvel based forest range officer, Anil Parab, is the investigating officer in this case. Three more accused persons are still wanted in this regard.
