Database of traffic offences will help implementation of e-challan system

MUMBAI: The city's traffic police plan to set up a central database of traffic violations. "The database will help when the electronic challan system, currently under state consideration, is eventually approved," said a traffic police officer. It has been suggested that the mobile number and email ID of every licence-holder be compulsorily registered while issuing a licence, so that an electronic challan can be emailed or texted when required.

Meanwhile, the force has set up a working group to explore the possibility of bank accounts for traffic divisions for collection of fines.

"A motorist will continue to have the option to pay fines in cash, which will be deposited by our personnel into the bank account. If he or she doesn't have the necessary cash, the motorist could swipe a credit or debit card. At present, cash fines are collected at each traffic division and taken to the Worli headquarters and then to the government treasury. This laborious process will be replaced by a simple bank transfer," said Phansalkar.

To help regulate and streamline traffic at key junctions, the state government has sanctioned funds for purchasing traffic barricades and traffic cones. The traffic department's campaign on road safety, featuring Amitabh Bachchan, will go on the floor in 2014 and will consist of a series of documentaries along the lines of his anti-polio campaign messages.
