Crash in Mumbra spurred slain RTI activist: Brother

BHIWANDI: The right to information (RTI) activist, Abrar Ansari, who was murdered on Monday had been moved by the building collapse in Mumbra that claimed more than 70 lives in April.

The Mumbra collapse is one of the worst building crashes in Maharashtra in recent memory. The incident claimed more lives than 41 building collapses put together in 2011.

"Abrar was shocked when he saw so many people die in the April 4 Lucky Compound tragedy," said Waqar, Abrar's elder brother who is a lecturer in a college.

"Like Mumbra, even Bhiwandi has several illegal constructions. He had visited the Mumbra site and helped people. He later decided to do something for society," he added. Abrar's family has demanded that the killers be arrested immediately and given maximum punishment. Abrar had lodged several complaints against illegal buildings by obtaining records under the info legislation. The activist was allegedly killed by four persons, including Samajwadi Party corporator Hasib Khan. The other accused have been identified as Asif Shaikh, Sheru Khan and Bahatar. The Thane police have formed three teams to trace the accused. "The involvement of more people is not being ruled out," said a senior police officer.

Hasib has reportedly constructed an illegal building in Guljar Nagar, said sources. Abrar's family also feels his friend may have a hand in the killing. "A friend of Abrar told him to come to Fatima Nagar. There the accused were lying in wait," Waqar added.

"We are working on some clues. We will soon make a breakthrough in the case," said Shivajirao Deshmukh, senior inspector of Shanti Nagar police station.

Abrar's family alleged that the police took the matter lightly. "The accused fled because the investigators dragged their feet initially," said a relative of the murdered activist. Abrar used to reside with his family at Kaveri Nagar in Bhiwandi.
