VASHI: Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation's (NMMC) health department has decided to speed up the Animal Birth Control (ABC) programme by starting a four-month temporary camp in the city.

The department will put forth the proposal for the same in the general body meeting on January 6 to resolve the stray dog population issue. As per the 19th livestock census conducted in 2012 , the stray dog population in the city stands at 29,864.

"On an average, 2,000 stray dogs have to be sterilized in a month. As per the World Health Organization (WHO), 70% of the population should be operated on in a year. But, the civic sterilization centre is barely managing to operate on 500 dogs due to the lack of space and medical facilities," said veterinary officer Dr Vaibhav V Zunjare. A team of doctors and staff from veterinary colleges in Mumbai will be part of the camp, he added.

The corporation has already identified 2,000 sq m area of a non-utilized Ghansoli hospital. Tentatively, 7,000 dogs have been targeted to be sterilized and the estimated cost to be incurred is Rs 1.5 crore.
