Om Prakash Yadav had allegedly stolen a Maruti Esteem from Kherwadi in Bandra (E) for a joyride. But he rammed the vehicle into a pole at Santa Cruz (W) on Sunday. Passersby promptly handed him over to the police.
Yadav lives on the pavement at Dadar's vegetable market. The police are verifying whether he has a criminal record.
"Yadav wasn't confident of steering the vehicle. He was on the RK Mission Marg on Sunday night when he lost control over the car and rammed it into a pole. We received a call from locals and went to the spot. We arrested him and further probe is on."
Yadav, however, provided a different story. He told the police that two of his acquaintances, who were good at driving, used to humiliate him often as he did not know how to drive. Determined to learn, he pleaded with the duo to teach him. They agreed to do so if they were paid Rs 500. Yadav claims to have shelled out the money and said the Esteem was arranged by the duo. But soon after he rammed the car into a pole, the duo stepped out of the vehicle and vanished.
"We are verifying Yadav's claims," the officer said.
