MUMBAI: The Maharashtra education department has decided to include a chapter on Sachin Tendulkar in the state board curriculum. Its decision came a day after the legend retired from international cricket after playing his 200th Test.

"Sachin Tendulkar is an icon. He helped draw global attention to India. Future generations should know about him," said Maharashtra education minister Rajendra Darda on Sunday. "We conducted meetings and decided that a chapter on him will be included in one of our textbooks soon."

The minister said that officials have discussed the issue and the addition of the special chapter is certain. There is, however, no clarity about which class and subject's curriculum will include it. "We'll conduct more meetings to clear these points," said Darda.

Last week, members of Maharashtra Navnirman Vidyarthi Sena (MNVS) had written a letter to the education department, requesting for the inclusion of a chapter on Tendulkar in a state board textbook. "Sachin is known internationally for his talent. We are often known as people from his homeland. Many Indian legends have made their way into state board textbooks; this is to make sure that coming generations remember them too. Sachin is one such legend," said Chetan Pednekar of MNVS. Pednekar said his wing was happy with the education department's decision.
