After receiving a notice from the BMC last year asking them to vacate the premises, the students and management of Gandhi Memorial English High School in Matunga Labour Camp have been in a state of panic.
"The notice stated that a BMC school building in the same area is in a dilapidated state, so in order to accommodate students from that school, we have to vacate our school building since it is BMC property. We have been running the school since 1992, and dutifully paying rent to BMC every year. Suddenly, they ask us to vacate the property," said John Chelladurai, secretary of the school. "Where do we take the children?" In June, the school finally took this matter to the Bombay high court and by September a stay was ordered on this process.
According to the court order, the BMC is supposed to file a detailed report after its meeting with the school management before November 28. BMC held a meeting on Thursday. "We conducted the meeting to hear out all parties involved in this matter. A decision will be taken keeping in mind the well-being of the staff and children," said R R Bhise, BMC education officer.
