MUMBAI: State government has decided to invite suggestions from public on as to how to build Chhatrapati Shivaji's memorial with a statue in the Arabian Sea off the Marine drive coast.
"Very soon the state will launch a website in the name of the memorial and will ask for opinion on as to which elements of the Maratha emperor's life be played up to make it the world's best monument," revealed Additional chief secretary Dr P S Meena of the general administration department (GAD).
He said first and foremost a design would have to be selected based on which various studies would be instituted by the government. To finalise the design, the help of people, the historians and the architects would be sought. The memorial is proposed to be built on a 16 hectare rock 2.6 km away from Nariman Point and just a km away from Raj Bhavan.
"National Environmental Engineering and Research Institute (NEERI), Maharashtra Maritime Board (MMB), and National Institute of Oceanography (NIO) will conduct environment impact study following which the proposal will be moved to various departments such as union environment ministry for various approvals," he said. "Once we get all approvals the tender to order construction would be floated," he pointed out.
Meanwhile, the Council of Architect has reportedly asked the state to pay up Rs 6 crore as fees to the Team One Architect, a firm that initially prepared the design in 2009 for the project . The state has proposed to give it a look of the fort with a statue atop. Statue will be bigger than that of Liberty's in New York and the fort below will have state-of-the art facilities as aquarium, theatre, helipad, marina, museum and other recreational facilities.
