Mumbai's floating population is putting economic burden

MUMBAI: If gone by the state minister, city's floating population was putting an extra burden on the state's economy.

City's guardian minister Jayant Patil has officially put up a demand for additional funds from the Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan and his deputy Ajit Pawar to meet the infrastructure needs of the city's floating population.

Patil disclosed this at a meeting of planning committee for the island city held on Monday in the presence of various ministers, legislators and the corporators.

Patil, while chairing the meeting of island city's planning committee, announced committee's approval for an expenditure of Rs78 crore in the next fiscal for government's various developmental schemes.

Minister of state for housing Sachin Ahir, Women and Child development minister Varsha Gaikwad, and legislators Divakar Raote, Prakash Binsale, Amin Patel, Kalidas Kolambkar, Madhukar Chavan, Annie Shekhar, Mangalprabhat Lodha and Nitin Sardesai attended the meet.

Of the Rs 78 crore, around Rs 51 crore have been kept for various general schemes and projects in the city such as roads, health and education facilities meant for the city's overall development.

Patil also directed the collector's office to clear the Mahim fort area of the encroachments and rehabilitate the eligible slum dwellers. He said the fort had got the status of protected monument from the state and was due for restoration and further development. He said the efforts were on to get funding for the Banganga rejuvenation project approved by the centre.
