Two drivers to learn steering bulletproof cars in Germany

MUMBAI: Two drivers of the state government will soon be in Germany to train on bulletproof Mercedes Benz cars.

The state government has ordered two vehicles for ferrying foreign dignitaries around Mumbai.

"The Democratic Front government had ordered two Mercedes Benz cars to drive foreign dignitaries visiting Mumbai. Accordingly, we will now be sending two of our drivers abroad to get trained on how to handle these cars," protocol minister Suresh Shetty told TOI.

The government was left red-faced after several foreign dignitaries refused to travel in the bulletproof vehicles available with the protocol department. "During their visit to the city, delegates from Spain, Malaysia and even Iran refuted to get into the bulletproof vehicles available with us," said a protocol department official.

"It is embarrassing for the government to ferry high-profile dignitaries in usual cars," chief minister Prithviraj Chavan said. "There are issues such as Customs duty, central taxes and other procedures to bring imported cars in Mumbai. I have spoken to the Centre and the new cars will soon be in Mumbai," he added.

Speaking in the legislative assembly last year, the Leader of Opposition, Eknath Khadse, had slammed the government for spending Rs 3.5 crore to purchase two cars for VVIPs from the contingency fund.
